What is a Configuration Item (CI)?

Configuration Item (CI) as any component which needs to be managed in order to deliver an IT service. This includes hardware (major or minor), software, network equipment, facilities, suppliers, documentation, or any other element that contributes to an IT service.  Each CI has specific attributes that define its role in the IT infrastructure. These provide technical specifications, service dependencies, and relationships with other components.
